Some thoughts on Alfred the Great

I have imagined being asked who I take as an example in politics - and my first thought would be to say Alfred the Great.

He was perhaps the first English reformist, and historians attribute him with reforms to the church, the military, and in education - that is, in the nation's three estates.

He was also a translator and is attributed with making accessible important works of Latin philosophy to his subjects.

Alfred negotiated peace with Viking leader Guthrum and promoted learning and literature among his subjects.

To this date he remains the only English monarch widely attributed with the epithet "the Great."
